Much beloved of royalty, Peridot has been a favorite since the time of the Egyptians. The Egyptians called Peridot, “Gem of the Sun”. Assigning special healing powers to the green gemstone. It misidentified as emeralds in antiquity. Plenty-the-elder first recorded its existence in the 1st century AD on a small island off the Red Sea coast, Saint John’s Island or Zabargad. The Hawaiian’s revered Peridot as the Goddess Pele’s tears.
One of the largest examples is in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC which weighs 319 carats. The color of Peridot ranges from green to yellow. Growing in an Orthorhombic. Its chemical formula is (Mg, Fe)2 SiO4. The metallic elements give Peridot its high luster.
